lively redesign of the Mainperle

For architects it is part of their job to combine the useful with the aesthetic. And to create a successful symbiosis of form and function. When the Lower Franconian town of Miltenberg had its waterfront redesigned as part of its latest flood protection, it was clear that natural stone should be used for this.

It is more durable and livelier in large areas, recommended the Würzburg architecture office Holl Wieden, which is responsible for the redesign, of the half-timbered town of Miltenberg in the Main Valley. An almost two kilometer long protective wall is now supposed to keep out water masses. Because in the past floods had repeatedly hit the left side of the Main in Miltenberg. As a result, the old town suffered great damage from flooding.

With its flood protection measure, the district town now wants to curb the risk of flooding. And at the same time decided to upgrade the design of the Main Promenade as part of the construction work. This invites you to take a little trip around the world: Nine types of belgrano® natural stone from six countries help to visually liven up Mainstrasse as a wild pavement.

The 8,000 square meters of natural stones from Berliner Steincontor GmbH come from Sweden, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Vietnam and China and adorn the 9,000 square meter sidewalk area from the old elementary school to the Jagd Hotel Rose. The different plasters are a mixture of colored porphyry, red quartzite, quartz monzodiorite anthracite, light gray granodiorite, purple-red and red ryholite as well as red, red-gray and pink granite.

The different stone colors of the granite, porphyry and quartzite are intended to make the large area of the promenade more lively. The varied red and light gray tones also harmonize with the typical color of the regional sandstone. The red Main sandstone, which was coveted in the Middle Ages, was also used as a paving slab in areas such as the river forum.

The sawn and flamed belgrano® paving from BESCO for the promenade itself did not require any special processing. And impress with their durability as well as resistance to frost and de-icing salt.

In view of such extensive and lengthy redesign as the case in Miltenberg, an attractive price-performance ratio plays a major role. “The natural stone from BESCO was a cheap offer,” says Dr. Hartmut Holl from the responsible architectural office Holl Partnership Wieden. “It was also helpful to be able to obtain all the stones from one supplier.”

Because during the construction period of the pavement, which took around a year, BESCO delivered all the materials at the right time and in the appropriate quantities. This is thanks to the close coordination between the construction company, paving company and supplier. As a result, the construction company’s financing costs can be minimized considerably.
