Killesberghöhe: old exhibition grounds in Stuttgart revitalized

When inner-city areas are to be redesigned, architects have a wide range of options. In the case of the Höhenpark Killesberg in Stuttgart, the migration of the exhibition center to the airport freed up a particularly large area. In addition to new residential areas, extensive green spaces were to be created on the old site. The project was completed in 2012, the showpiece of which is the almost ten hectare “Green Fugue”. The interweaving of soft forms with hard natural stone combines pioneering ecology with the historical tradition of the area as a quarry.

The approach of the working group “Zukunft Killesberg” with the participating planning offices Rainer Schmidt Landschaftsarchitekten GmbH from Munich and Pfrommer + Roeder Freie Landschaftsarchitekten from Stuttgart envisaged the merging of the “Green Fugue” with the adjacent parks and residential areas into a harmonious unit. A system of paths that is reminiscent of chisel marks in a quarry is overlaid by three-dimensionally structured lawn cushions. This creates a lively topography that creates space for discovery and space to play and relax at the same time. The contrast between the green area and the white-gray belgrano® natural stone creates an exciting balance.

The latter is particularly impressive due to its diverse shapes. The edging elements with finely stocked visible surfaces vary greatly in their dimensions and run through the system in a wave-like manner as partially radial path boundaries. There are also acute and obtuse angled corner elements that immediately catch the eye. In an impressive contrast are the just a few centimeters thin bricks made of belgrano® granite that form the adjacent watercourse. Due to the broken view, the difficult-to-produce elements appear like a completely different material and thus emphasize the liveliness of the stream, which is fed from a cistern. Thanks to the robust properties of the stone in terms of water absorption and resistance to frost and de-icing salt, there is no risk of exploding in winter.

An estimated 1,500 to 2,000 individual elements of the belgrano® granite were built into the “green joint”. The Berlin company BESCO, which specializes in the project business with natural stone and has already implemented over 1,000 major projects throughout Germany, has proven to be a reliable partner for demanding production and logistics.

BESCO has earned a good reputation for high product quality and fast deliveries. The extraction and production of the Asian stone is monitored on site by our own inspection teams and every load is randomly checked before shipment. As a certified partner of Win = Win Fair Stone, the company also guarantees that no child labor takes place. During the planning and implementation phase of the Killesberg project, the experienced experts from BESCO provided those responsible with advice and assistance.

With the “Green Fugue”, the planners embedded the park not only in the overall context of the new Killesberghöhe, but also in the city of Stuttgart as a whole. Because the facility is to be understood as a continuation of the “Green U” in the city center – and thus as a coherent landscape that extends from the palace park to the outskirts.
