The new town hall square in Seubersdorf on the Upper Palatinate – the new town center on three levels
The gap created by the demolition of the former Seubersdorfer Hof, a restaurant in the center of Seubersdorf, had to be bridged. The aim was to prevent the community life from losing its appeal. Thus, the realization competition “Redevelopment of the town hall square” was initiated by the municipality of Seubersdorf. The concepts of Neumann & Heinsdorff and ver.de landschaftsarchitektur convinced the jury and were given the opportunity to start with the realization. The challenge was not only to realize the desire for an increased quality of stay, but at the same time to incorporate a height difference of a total of 5 meters into the designs, caused by the slope of the area.
Creating a new quality for the community – the materiality speaks for itself
According to the plans of Neumann & Heinsdorff, a library with a café, an archive and a newly built civic hall with club rooms were built. The aim was to counteract the absence of the gastronomy and to fill the gap in community life.
To overcome the height difference of the site, it was decided to create three plateaus and connect them by stairs to bring everything into harmony. A uniform material was chosen to make the place experience as a coherent ensemble. Light gray pavers and stairs made of belgrano® granite, supplied by Berliner Steincontor, were chosen for this purpose, thus implementing the idea of unity in an exemplary manner.
belgrano® Natural stone leading from level to level
On the lower level of the square, which leads from the main road to the civic hall, there is a tree island. The neighboring elementary school is accessed via the middle level. The highest level is the town hall square itself. The library, church and historic town hall can be accessed from here. The planning of the town hall square was carried out by ver.de landschaftsarchitektur. Its design also contributed to an identity-creating town center – a meeting place for the generations, a place where future events, markets and also festivities can be held.
The completion of the town center in Seubersdorf
It took around eight years to complete the total of seven sections of construction and to open the town hall square in May 2021. Even school operations had been taken into account during the construction phases and the summer vacations were used for the final finishing phase of the respective level. Now the entire area shines in new splendor and convinces young and old with an increased quality of stay and its individual charme.
