Luxembourg renovates with natural stone – new paving for the old town

When it comes to a new look, there are always very specific ideas that need to be met. It is no different with a road renovation. As the client, the City of Luxembourg had very specific requirements for the paving of the new pavement in its old town. BESCO was able to fulfill this with its beige-colored belgrano® granite – and delivered a total of around 18,000 square meters of natural stone in a logistical masterpiece within six months. It will now be gradually built in the historic district over the next few years.

18,000 m² granite floor coverings of constant quality

BESCO reliably delivered around 295 containers full of granite from China to the Grand Duchy, which celebrated its 200th birthday in 2015. The task for Steincontor was to transport the desired amount of 18,000 square meters of 15 cm thick floor slabs in nine formats to Luxembourg in certain percentages. “That sounds easy, but it often requires a lot of tact,” says BESCO managing director Frank Dickmann.

Keeping the specified technical parameters such as material properties and strength values under control with such a quantity was a particular challenge. Also because the stones had to be manufactured according to type, i.e. packaged separately according to their format. At the same time, the packaging units should be stable enough that they can withstand the required storage until 2021.

And all of this within a given time frame of six months – otherwise high contractual penalties would have been threatened. “This is only possible with an experienced team and a qualified production partner,” says Dickmann.

The belgrano® natural stone now adorns the new paving in Rue Sigefroi, which marks the entrance to Luxembourg’s old town. What was previously a popular parking space for tourists’ coaches is now inviting them to stroll in a new look.
