Rheinboulevard receives German Landscape Architecture Prize 2017

At the German Landscape Architects Award 2017, 1st place went to the new Rheinboulevard in Cologne . In the category “Landscape architecture in detail” received the Ottoplatz also received another project in Cologne. In both cases, natural stone was used that was supplied by Berlin-based Steincontor BESCO – an experienced partner for high-quality and extraordinary natural stone projects.

The Rhine belongs to Cologne like the cathedral and the Kölsch, but for a long time the right bank of the Rhine was not directly accessible from the city center. A circumstance that the Berlin planning office Planorama Landschaftsarchitektur wanted to remedy.

For example, a spectacular 500-meter-long staircase was supposed to make the river accessible over a great length via the Deutz district.

The city of Cologne had its “Rheinboulevard” project implemented from 2008 to 2016 for a construction cost of 24 million euros, which opened at the end of 2016. Now the new building has received 1st place in the German Landscape Architects Prize 2017.

Natural stone as heat storage for sun worshipers

The chic structure was built on an area of 2 hectares between the Hohenzollern Bridge and Deutzer Bridge on the right bank of the Rhine.

The new bank staircase overcomes a height difference of about 6 meters and has spacious, barrier-free seating steps. Up to 10,000 people can be accommodated here, making the Rhine Boulevard a popular leisure destination.

Since the bank stairs are in a flood area, appropriate protective walls were necessary.

For their design, the planners used belgrano® basalt from BESCO. 100,000 individual stones of the anthracite-warm gray natural stone were used from 2014 to 2015 on an area of around 2,000 m².

The flamed and rough surface was supplied in various formats and material thicknesses. Frost-resistant and unrestrictedly durable, the basalt is ideally suited for the new popular city attraction.
