project description by JOMA Landschaftsarchitektur

The concert and congress hall is on the edge of Bamberg’s old town. It is the home of the Bamberg Symphony and a venue for a wide variety of events and congresses.

The square of the concert hall was implemented with a clear design language and materiality in a heterogeneous environment. The square appears independent, but takes on references to the building.

The division of the square into the space allocated to the new foyer and a path connection for pedestrians and cyclists is the basic idea of the new design.

The design arch made of dark basanite zones the square and cleverly differentiates the actual recreation area from the path connection for pedestrians and cyclists.

The design arch also serves as a location for seating elements, lighting elements and in the form of a wall as a side wall of the ramp to the existing bridge over the Regnitz.

“Wavy bands” starting from the new foyer, run through the plaza made of light-colored gneiss – a clear reference to the new structures is established.

Light pillars in the design arch illuminate the entire square and reflect the shape of the stage lights in the concert hall.

View axes to Bamberg Cathedral and Michelsberg offer a unique environment in the city, which is a world cultural heritage site.
