Sustainable Urban Planning: belgrano® Sponge City Solutions

reading time - 5 min

The sponge city principle stores rainwater and thereby reduces the risk of flooding. BESCO implements this concept with sponge city solutions under the belgrano® brand, contributing to improved urban climates and actively supporting climate change adaptation.

Sustainable Urban Planning: belgrano® Sponge City Solutions

In recent years, reports of floods and severe high-water events have been increasing – globally, across Europe, and particularly in Germany. The impacts of climate change are becoming ever more evident. A significant factor driving flood risk is the high proportion of paved surfaces, especially in cities and densely populated areas. Sealed surfaces rapidly channel rainwater into sewage systems during heavy rains, further increasing the risk of flooding. At the same time, less water is able to infiltrate the soil, which not only affects the water supply for plants but also impedes groundwater recharge.

The Benefits of the Sponge City Principle

In recent years, innovative approaches have been developed to better protect cities from flooding and improve the urban climate. A particularly promising approach is the sponge city principle, which aims to design cities to absorb and retain rainwater like a sponge. A key element of this principle is the use of light-colored, heat-reducing surfaces with high permeability, which reduce the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall. At the same time, rainwater retention contributes to groundwater recharge. Additionally, an increased amount of greenery and plant-driven evaporation help cool the surrounding environment.

Natural stone in the sponge city: Water-permeable surfaces

belgrano® sponge city solutions made from natural stone play a central role in climate change adaptation strategies. Featuring water-permeable joints and a specialized substructure, they allow rainwater to seep directly into the ground. The eco-friendly design provides ample space for grass to grow between the stones, creating green joints that filter fine dust, produce oxygen, and improve the microclimate. At the same time, they serve as a habitat for insects. In this way, natural stone paving sustainably enhances urban climates and helps prevent flooding.

Once again, we take a closer look at some of our belgrano® natural stone projects, some of which were completed more than ten years ago. We take a closer look at the Porschestraße in Wolfsburg (completed in 2009), the market square in Schönebeck an der Elbe (completed in 2016), the State Archive in Magdeburg (completed in 2011) and the main square in Landsberg am Lech (completed in 2013). The longevity of belgrano® natural stone is proven by current photographs.
