The lively center of Wehingen – rethought with a view to the future

The municipality of Wehingen, located in the Swabian Alb in the state of Baden-Württemberg, has about 4,000 inhabitants and covers an area of almost 15 square kilometers. Different epochs can be identified by the evolved building development. The center of the village, previously used exclusively as a functional transit area, was to gain in quality of stay and in the future be experienced as a clearly defined new urban center including green structures, water access and an attractive, contemporary appearance.

The previously limited possibilities for use of Wehingen’s city center were to be opened up and made experienceable. At the same time, criteria such as quality of stay, accessibility, and networking of the surroundings were to come to the fore. At the same time, there was a desire to differentiate the use of space within the town center and thus to develop a clearly recognizable offer. At the same time, there was a strong desire to create visual axes to historic buildings, such as Saint Ulrich Church, the Fool’s Fountain, Saint Berthevin’s Garden, and the town hall, in order to foreground the lively, friendly, but also authentic character of the community.

Thanks to belgrano® natural stone, the result is convincing with its clear structures. The footpaths were widened and parking facilities had to make way for a new network of paths. A uniform floor covering for footpaths now creates structure and a flowing unity at the same time. European belgrano® granite was laid in rows for this purpose and, along with seating made of solid wood and an impressive array of plants, significantly enhances the local climate. In addition to the roughly 2,000 square meters of gray-yellow-beige and gray paving stones, curbs, edgings and gutter stones made of belgrano® natural stone complete the new lively center of Wehingen. This means that nothing stands in the way of markets, events, open-air church services, gastronomy and cultural festivities following the redesign of the town center.
