To the west of the medieval center of Schmalkalden, the suburb is undergoing a difficult renovation process with heterogeneous intermediate states.
With the new parks at Schmalkalde and Fuchsenkothe there is a chance of spatial stabilization and the development of a new identity.
For this purpose, the sub-areas develop the commonalities of an overarching urban landscape, in terms of materiality, detailed design and the development of space-forming park shells made of columnar trees, large grasses and perennials.
Each park retains its own profile and program.
The open Westendpark stages the exposure of the Schmalkalde and the experience of this wild river in the middle of the city. Lawn terraces follow the curve of the river arch.
Large events can take place on the large park meadow. Garden windows are woven into the city-side planting hems.
In the city park, romantic footbridges at the infirmary ponds are connected with new promenades at the spring pond of the Fuchsenkothe.
