The project – the creation of a vibrant city center

The large district town of Neustadt near Coburg, located in the Upper Franconian district of Coburg, was looking for an enhanced quality of life for its market square. The vacancy of numerous stores in the surrounding area and the fact that the existing paving material was coming loose from the bond over large areas caused a growing call for a new town center. In May 2020, work began on implementing the designs of the landscape architecture firm Rainer Schmidt.

The starting point – a cityscape shaped by its history

A town fire in 1839 destroyed a total of 179 houses. The market square area was subsequently enlarged and straightened. The church of St. George on the Glockenberg was connected to the now rectangular square by a visual link and has since been regarded as the town’s urban landmark. In the early 1970s, the square underwent another formative change: Neustadt’s town hall was built.

Curtain up for the city’s new theater – with a perfect setting thanks to belgrano®

According to the extraordinary design concept of Rainer Schmidt Landschaftsarchitekten, the new market square of the district town was to be understood as a theater, with the stage and auditorium being visible in the square itself and in the open area in front of the church, depending on how one looks at it. An appealing lighting concept and the selection of high-quality belgrano® natural stone for floor and paving slabs, block steps and seating elements, among other elements, significantly increased the quality of stay in the square and revitalized the city center. The conversion of the library integrated in the town hall into a contemporary media library creates an additional point of attraction for residents and visitors.
