With its special investment program Heureka, the state of Hesse will invest a total of around € 200 million in the modernization and expansion of the University of Kassel by 2020. Part of the program is the creation of a new educational landscape on campus where research, teaching and learning are possible.
The areas of the outdoor spaces between Moritzstrasse, Gottschalkstrasse and Mombachstrasse cover a total of 16,700 m² and were planned by the k1 landscape architects from Berlin. The newly created connection between the departments of the university and the Ahnapark is divided into a carpet-like plateau made of natural stone slabs and paving, lawns, a large open staircase and individual retreat areas.
An essential element of the campus is the central square, as a place of communication and connection between the lecture hall center, campus center and canteen. The spatial focus runs here and unites the existing buildings with the new structures and the park area.
When designing the new open space, numerous natural stones in a wide variety of sizes, treatments and shapes were used and significantly shape the topography of the campus area.
The Berliner Steincontor BESCO, which specializes in natural stone projects, supplied all natural stone for the project. The natural stones were individually manufactured for each construction phase and delivered to the construction site on demand.
The Hessian construction management, as the client, not only demanded a smooth delivery of the materials in the desired quality, but also insisted on sustainable and fairly produced natural stones. The belgrano® natural stones used have the WIN = WIN certificate from Fair Stone, the international social and environmental standard of the natural stone industry.
In addition to the sustainable and fair production of the natural stones used, the technical resistance and the resulting durability of the materials were also decisive.
