Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften: belgrano® natural stone as a pioneering building material for the garden of the future

reading time - 5 min

The Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften 2024 in Berlin once again offered an opportunity to experience the diversity and depth of science up close. Around 60 scientific institutions opened their doors to visitors of all ages, including universities, colleges, museums and research institutes. BESCO provided belgrano® natural stone slabs to the students of the landscape architecture course at the Berliner Hochschule für Technik for the construction of a show garden.

Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften 2024 brings Berlin research to life

The Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften (Long Night of the Sciences) in Berlin is an annual event at which scientific institutions open their doors to the public. Visitors can take part in experiments, explore interactive exhibitions and discover the latest research findings in lectures. The event aims to spark enthusiasm for science and research and promote dialog between scientists and the public.

BHT inspires with interactive experiences and live demonstrations

The Berliner Hochschule für Technik (BHT) in Berlin-Wedding was one of the central institutions at this year’s Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften. Around 5,300 interested people visited the university campus, which offered fascinating insights into research and technology with 115 diverse program items. Interactive experiments where visitors could get hands-on were particularly popular.

BHT students present innovative garden design

Under the motto H2O is life, five BHT students from the Landscape Architecture course and a dual student from the Landscape Construction course have designed a show garden especially for the Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften to meet the challenges of the future. The focus is on the importance of water in the home garden; topics such as rainwater management, cost-effective implementation and design aspects are covered. The result is an idyllic oasis in the middle of Berlin’s hectic city life.

The highlight of the show garden is a herbaceous bed specially designed for dry and sunny areas. The chosen perennials are hardy and easy to care for, making them ideal for extreme site conditions. On the opposite side of the garden, separated by a path and lawn, the students installed raised beds with integrated water tanks. A terrace and comfortable garden furniture offer visitors a welcome opportunity to relax and enjoy the garden.

BESCO supports future-oriented show garden with natural stone slabs

BESCO provided the students with belgrano® gabbro natural stone slabs for the show garden. The students used these to create a path that leads through the garden and separates the herbaceous bed from the rest of the garden. The dark slabs are embedded in bark mulch and were placed with great attention to harmonious placement.

belgrano® natural stone is not only a natural material that requires little energy to produce, but is also extremely sustainable. Its durability and resistance make it the ideal building material for the students’ show garden. In addition, natural stone helps to reduce the urban heat island effect, as it absorbs and stores less heat than asphalt surfaces. This helps to keep urban environments cool. Thanks to these properties, natural stone is considered a pioneering building material that fits perfectly into the vision of a sustainable garden.

Prof. Dr. Inés Rohlfing about the student construction project and its educational aspects

Prof. Dr. Inés Maria Rohlfing, project manager, landscape architect and professor of construction technology and construction management in the landscape architecture course, speaks excitedly about the innovative project: “The aim of this project is to provide our students with the necessary financial and time resources so that they can plan independently. They should not only work theoretically, but also sit on the digger or wheel loader themselves. This gives them first-hand experience of the challenges that can arise during implementation. These practical experiences offer valuable learning effects.”

Prof. Dr. Rohlfing teaches construction management, among other subjects, and emphasizes the importance of practical experience: “Theory alone is not enough to understand the complexity of the construction process. That’s why we enable our students to carry out real construction projects.” This hands-on learning not only promotes technical knowledge, but also an understanding of real-life challenges and the development of practical skills that are essential in landscape architecture.
