Natural Stone Bridge Surfaces for Demanding Conditions
Bridge infrastructure has to cope with a demanding combination of weather, moisture and constant use. In Germany, where many bridges built several decades ago are now reaching the end of their service life, durability is becoming an increasingly important consideration.
The bridge surface itself is exposed to a wide range of conditions throughout the year. Winter brings repeated freeze-thaw cycles, while summer temperatures can put materials under considerable thermal stress. On pedestrian and cycle bridges, the surface also has to provide reliable grip in wet conditions.
Material choice plays a key role. Timber surfaces require regular maintenance to withstand prolonged exposure to the elements and can become slippery when wet. Concrete surfaces, meanwhile, are susceptible to the effects of de-icing salts, which can eventually cause corrosion of the reinforcement.
Natural stone can provide a durable alternative. The right combination of stone type, surface finish and construction method results in surfaces that are resistant to frost, heavy use and changing weather conditions. For hard stones such as granite, BESCO uses specific surface treatments to achieve the required slip resistance for heavily trafficked areas. The appropriate finish is selected according to the technical requirements of each project.
Three Bridges in Berlin’s Spektegrünzug
A recent project in Berlin-Spandau demonstrates the possibilities of natural stone in bridge construction. As part of the redevelopment of three pedestrian and cycle bridges in the Spektegrünzug, the City of Berlin chose light grey belgrano® granite for the bridge surfaces.
Granite is particularly well suited to demanding outdoor applications. Its dense structure makes it highly resistant to frost and de-icing salts, while an appropriate surface finish provides the necessary grip for everyday use.

The project also illustrates the possibilities offered by modern stone fabrication. Large elements and complex geometries can now be produced with a level of precision that opens up new applications for natural stone in infrastructure projects.
Trapezoidal Slabs for Curved Bridge Decks
The geometry of the three bridges was one of the project’s particular challenges. Their curved routes follow the surrounding parkland, requiring the paving to follow the same geometry.
Instead of relying solely on standard rectangular slabs, BESCO supplied custom-made trapezoidal slabs in grey granite. Each slab was manufactured to millimetre precision to fit the curved supporting structure. Once laid, the individual pieces form a continuous joint pattern that follows the line of the bridge.

The result is a paving layout that responds directly to the geometry of the structure, while the precisely fabricated stone elements provide a robust surface designed for long-term use.
Looking Beyond the Initial Cost
For public infrastructure, the cost of a material cannot be considered in isolation. Maintenance, repairs and replacement all contribute to the overall cost of a bridge throughout its service life.
Durable natural stone surfaces can help reduce this ongoing effort. When the material, surface finish and construction method are matched to the conditions on site, the resulting surface can remain in use for decades with comparatively little intervention.
There is also growing interest in construction systems that allow individual components to be maintained or replaced without having to renew an entire structure. Precisely fabricated natural stone elements can be incorporated into these modular approaches, providing individual components that can be replaced when necessary.
For bridges and other heavily used public infrastructure, where service life is measured in decades, these considerations are becoming increasingly relevant at the planning stage.
