Natural Stone in Urban Spaces: Why the Material of the Future Is Millions of Years Old

Discussions about the future of our cities are often dominated by new technologies and innovative mobility concepts. Yet one of the most promising materials has been with us for centuries. Natural stone has shaped European cities for generations and continues to provide answers to many of today's most pressing urban challenges.

A Shift in Urban Planning

From the 1960s through the 1980s, concrete dominated urban development. It was readily available, cost effective and easy to standardise. Decades later, however, many of these surfaces reveal the limits of their service life through cracking, deterioration and increasing maintenance requirements. Today, municipalities and planners are taking a different approach. Rather than focusing solely on initial costs, they are designing public spaces with life cycles of 50 to 100 years in mind and are deliberately selecting materials that can meet these long term demands.

Natural stone is exceptionally well suited to this challenge. Igneous stones such as granite, basalt and diorite offer outstanding resistance to weathering, frost and acids. They withstand winter maintenance, heavy delivery traffic, large public events and the continuous wear of highly frequented urban spaces while maintaining both their functionality and visual appeal.

Mercedes Platz (now Uber Platz), Berlin: The exceptional durability of natural stone is evident in demanding urban environments such as Berlin’s Mercedes Platz. Here, strategically selected belgrano® diorite continuously withstands heavy goods traffic, high visitor volumes during major events and the permanent mechanical stress around integrated water features.

Economic Efficiency Through Modern Manufacturing

When discussing material choices with public decision makers, initial investment costs often receive the greatest attention. Over several decades, however, the slightly higher purchase price of natural stone is quickly offset by significantly reduced maintenance and replacement costs.

At the same time, manufacturing technology has advanced considerably. CNC saw lines, robotics and state of the art diamond tooling enable highly precise custom production at far more competitive costs than traditional processing methods once allowed.

Jahnplatz, Bielefeld: To create durable, level and economically efficient pedestrian surfaces around the city’s central public transport hub, light grey beige belgrano® natural stone paving made from selected granites was installed using a bound construction system.

True Circularity Instead of Short Replacement Cycles

While many construction materials require replacement or downcycling after only one generation, natural stone naturally supports a circular economy. Paving stones and slabs can be carefully lifted and reinstalled elsewhere decades later without any loss of quality or performance.

As a genuine natural product, belgrano® natural stone contains no artificial binders or polymers. In addition, energy intensive processes such as cement production are avoided, resulting in an excellent environmental profile reflected in Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).

Accessibility and Technical Performance

Public spaces must provide safe, comfortable and unrestricted access for everyone. The misconception that stone paving compromises accessibility has long been overcome through modern manufacturing technologies.

By combining precisely sawn and lightly textured top surfaces with traditionally split sides, natural stone paving achieves a remarkably even surface while preserving the characteristic joint pattern of classic stone paving. The result is excellent walking comfort, smooth rolling performance and outstanding visual quality.

Schwabinger Tor, Munich: BESCO supplied more than 20,000 m² of belgrano® natural stone for this urban district along Leopoldstraße. In addition to paving and slabs, tactile guidance systems were integrated to provide safe orientation throughout the public realm.

HafenCity, Hamburg: belgrano® basalt was selected for the public spaces surrounding the harbour basin, creating a continuous connection between squares and promenades. Integrated tactile paving ensures reliable guidance for people with visual impairments.

Climate Adaptation: belgrano® Sponge City Solutions

Increasing heavy rainfall events and urban flooding highlight the challenges of sealed surfaces. Contrary to common belief, natural stone does not automatically create impermeable pavements. Water infiltration depends on the overall pavement system. Permeable or vegetated joints allow rainwater to seep naturally into the ground, reducing pressure on municipal drainage systems while replenishing groundwater resources.

Natural stone also contributes to cooler urban environments. Light coloured stones reflect solar radiation, while moisture stored within the joints evaporates and helps lower ambient temperatures during hot summer periods.

One key advantage of premium belgrano® igneous stone is its extremely low water absorption. Even under permanently moist conditions within sponge city systems and repeated freeze thaw cycles, the material remains dimensionally stable, frost resistant and highly durable.

Design Freedom and Lasting Urban Quality

High quality materials significantly enhance the character and attractiveness of public spaces. Beyond paving, natural stone offers virtually unlimited design possibilities for bespoke urban elements including seating, terraces, staircases, kerbs, retaining walls and fountains.

A broad spectrum of colours, ranging from light greys to warm yellows, reds and deep anthracite tones, allows planners to realise distinctive design concepts. Surface finishes such as flamed, blasted or honed textures provide additional opportunities to create unique visual and tactile experiences.

Rhine Boulevard & Ottoplatz, Cologne: For the Rhine Boulevard, BESCO supplied frost resistant belgrano® basalt for wall cladding and facing masonry along the flood protection structures surrounding the riverside steps. The project received First Prize at the German Landscape Architecture Award 2017. The adjacent Ottoplatz was honoured in the category “Landscape Architecture in Detail”, featuring a bespoke belgrano® blend of selected igneous stones throughout the square.
