Location

Brunnenplatz, 25761 Büsum

With a view of the Wadden Sea: Büsum’s central Brunnenplatz shines in new splendor.

In northern Germany, nestled in the picturesque landscape of the North Sea coast, the charming town of Büsum shines in a fresh light. As a traditional seaside resort, this harbor town has developed over the years into a popular holiday destination for visitors of all ages. Today, Büsum ranks alongside Sankt Peter-Ording and Westerland as one of the three most important vacation spots on the Schleswig-Holstein coast. A culinary specialty of the region are the famous Büsumer shrimp, delivered directly to the harbor by traditional shrimp trawlers.

Among the most recent developments is the comprehensive modernization of the Brunnenplatz, located directly by the main beach and in close proximity to the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea . The project focused on creating a sustainable and aesthetically pleasing design that respects the natural surroundings while enhancing the attractiveness of the town center. After more than two years of construction, the redesigned Brunnenplatz was officially opened in the summer of 2024.

Nature as Inspiration: The Brunnenplatz in the Sign of the Wadden Sea

The planners of the Wagner landscape architecture firm, who were tasked with redesigning the Fountain Square, drew inspiration for their concept from a unique experience. During a weekend walk along the Wadden Sea, the idea emerged to capture the unique dynamics and aesthetics of this natural landscape and bring it to the heart of the square. This led to the desire to create a central water feature, whose forms would mimic the characteristic structures of the Wadden Sea. The rest of the outdoor design was also deliberately crafted to reflect the unmistakable coastal landscape, establishing a harmonious connection between nature and the urban space.

Harmonious interplay of belgrano® natural stone and coastal landscape

For the approximately 120 m² water feature, as well as the surrounding paved areas and seating elements, the planners chose yellowish belgrano® granite from BESCO. This concept is complemented by dark gray belgrano® diorite, which visually accentuates the flowing water features of the installation.

With its sandy hues, the natural stone seamlessly blends into the maritime backdrop, reflecting the natural tones of the Wadden Sea. But the materials not only impress visually; the large-format natural stone slabs provide a durable, low-maintenance surface specifically designed to withstand the challenges of salty air and coastal climate.

Tailored belgrano® Solutions for Büsum’s New Brunnenplatz

Thanks to cutting-edge manufacturing techniques, the customized production of belgrano® natural stones offers architects virtually unlimited design possibilities. Complex geometries, organic shapes, or millimeter-precise adjustments—every element of the water feature was crafted with precision to meet the project’s specifications. In such special elements, natural stone proves to be an aesthetic and competitive alternative to materials like concrete. This innovative approach makes it possible to realize even the most demanding designs, which not only highlight the uniqueness of the location but also harmoniously combine aesthetics and functionality into a cohesive overall concept.
